Artists

Cang Xin

Cang Xin has been an important representative of Chinese performance art throughout the 90’s. Constantly challenging the limits of his body and preconceptions of what performance art can be he has moved away from Western conceptual art to an altogether more searching and philosophical stance. His recent work has been inspired by Shamanism and includes his ‘Licking’ series in which he interacts with the internal spirit of each object.

In November 2006 Cang Xin was invited to London by The Red Mansion Foundation to take part in an artist residency, part of our wider programme of exchange activities. He stayed in London for 3 weeks during which time he produced a new series of work ‘Identity Exchange: London Series’, a continuation of the ongoing ‘Identity Exchange’ series.

Cui Guotai

CUI GUOTAI

Born in Shenyang, Cui Guotai was concentrated in the beginning of his career on his inner emotional world and the esthetics of the nature of his homeland, the northeast of China. After an abstract period and four years later he approached the topics of his present-day works. His focus turned to the huge and wastelands of the regions of heavy industry, also in the northeast of China. The murky and weird industrial ruins, such as factories, chimneys, blast furnaces, locomotives, railways, ferroconcrete constructions, stand tall and upright in Guotai’s paintings. Here he uses the realistic images to bear witness to the passing of the heavy industrial era in China.

HE SEN

HE SEN

He Sen is an artist entirely committed to the medium of painting, which he uses to explore the human condition in his powerful and atmospheric works. He Sen is particularly concerned with the dilemmas facing China’s youth as they grow up in a society that is changing so fast.

He Sen graduated from the painting department of the Sichuan academy of Fine Arts in 1989. The early 1990s saw him paint still lives, which, despite lacking a direct human presence, were filled with traces of the China’s new “modern” youth: cassettes, cigarette packets, trainers. He Sen then began featuring people as his subject matter, culminating in a series of paintings depicting snapshots of brightly coloured and slightly surreal TV studios. Since these earlier works He Sen has abandoned the knife and started using the brush to depict his subjects, the details of his paintings are thus much finer and the surfaces smoother, giving the works a different feel.

LIU DING

Viewing Liu Ding’s works is like visiting a pure, futuristic “lab” that is full of texture. When you enter Liu Ding’s world, you will discover that all common and familiar materials end up appearing unusual. Liu Ding’s sensitivity towards and obsession with texture enables him to toy with raw materials and end products. By transforming the physical existence and texture of an object, he plays games with our usual experiences like a magician.

Liu Ding’s work was recently shown at China Power Station: Part 1, an off-site Serpenite Gallery exhibition of contemporary Chinese video, sound and installation art co-produced by The Red Mansion Foundation at Battersea Power Station.

MIAO XIAOCHUN

Starting from 2002, Miao Xiaochun began to create large, colorful photographs with the help of digital technology. While these works evoke earlier themes and images: the deepening commercialization of Chinese society, the solitude of the ancient gentleman, and the contrast between traditional and contemporary culture, their increasingly complex compositions reflect the artists heightened attraction to stylistic and technical innovations. Digital technology allows him to realize in photography this artistic vision derived from traditional painting, as he can weave numerous images into a single composition, creating subtle tensions and transitions unattainable with a conventional camera.

In his most recent work “The Last Judgement” Miao Xiaochun has generated a 3-D model of his body and substituted his image for each of the 400 figures in Michelangelo’s painting. Using software to manipulate the model into different positions, he then integrated these 3-D figures into a virtual space based on Michelangelo’s composition. He could then travel within the painting like a tourist, taking photos as he went along, from within the pictorial frame as well as from without. The artist worked with three assistants for six months to create these works.
